How to get from Prototype to Production?

You have a prototype…..now navigating the challenging landscape to production? Transitioning technology from initial thought or idea to a working concept in the lab/garage etc. is a major achievement and milestone for any organization large or small. Taking the next steps to full commercialization need to be contemplated with a strategy allowing the various features of the product to be realized while factoring cost, quality, regulatory, and time to market concerns.

This at most times is a balancing act and the settling point between these and other concerns changes as the product moves towards maturity in the market place. Most are familiar with what a large scale production product and operation look like, but may be surprised by what is behind the scenes ultimately driving success.

This discussion will examine the product life cycle, with a focus on the startup/development segment. Examples of typical commercialization problems will be identified with high level analysis to walk through and achieve the best practice solutions. A discussion of the iterative process will also be reviewed to illustrate how the balancing points change as a product matures.

Jeffrey Lake, Vice President Systems Div., PEKO Precision Products Inc.
Jeff (BS Electrical Engineering, Rochester Institute of Technology) is an experienced design and development professional with over 30 yrs. experience in the electro-mechanical product space. He is responsible for all aspects of development including; concept, design, reliability, development operations, and production support. His initial background as a systems controls engineer coupled with a management progression through project level, sales, and ultimately divisional responsibilities allow him to provide perspective on problem solving at several levels. With the service based offering provided by PEKO, Jeff has interfaced with hundreds of organizations, large and small, with products that span markets from high-tech semiconductor and medical, to more classic offerings in general industrial products, allowing him a broad set of experience with best-in-class practices. He has also served as a panelist for local venture funding, assessing startup offerings and viability.

Todd Scheske, Master Statistician, PEKO Precision Products Inc.
Todd Scheske has been working in manufacturing for over 30 years. He is a graduate of Roberts Wesleyan College, Clarkson University and Rochester Institute of Technology with BS degrees in Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering and an MS in Statistics, respectively. His work at PEKO currently involves engineering and statistical modeling, regulatory compliance and testing, as well as product and technology development. Todd has also been an elite level competitive cyclist for 31 years and coaching elite athletes, combining his technical background with sport to bring athletes to the highest levels of competition and provide unique perspective on product development in sports related devices for startups. He has also served as a panelist for local venture funding, assessing startup offerings and viability.
